2020 National Hakka Stir-fry Culinary Competition

The global coronavirus pandemic has brought a universal decline in the business of Hakka restaurants and hit the Hakka food industry hard. In order to promote Hakka food culture and stimulate the development of Hakka industries, it is planned to hold a Hakka stir-fry contest and encourage the participation of Hakka restaurant operators and Hakka cooks, bringing in the resources of ancillary markets in Hakka areas to show off local Hakka cuisine and combining the contest with small farmers’ markets. Groups of local small farmers and returning young people are to be invited, providing traditional foods, agricultural specialties, cultural and creative products, and experiences and promotional activities related to Hakka culture, to raise the level of public participation, stimulate Hakka tourism and activate the output value of the Hakka economy.

To expand the benefits of marketing publicity for the contest, it is planned to extend special invitations to internationally-known celebrity chefs, Hakka head chefs and gourmets with large internet followings to act as the judges, and furthermore to have a professional team make a Hakka stir-fry promotional film that features local ingredients and food culture as well as highlights from the contest that can be used for marketing on internet media platforms, and through this to draw young people (families) to take notice of and to recognize Hakka cuisine. The Council expects that this contest will help the winning restaurant operators become better known, and amid the severe test posed by the pandemic can also create a better situation for the development of the Hakka food industry.
