Hakka band iColor

Chinese name: 愛客樂

Year of Establishment: 2013

Founder: Dai Yang (戴陽)

The band iColor is not only committed to preserving Hakka traditional culture, but also creating a contemporary Hakka music sensation. Its unrestricted and innovative music style elevated Hakka music to a new level, enabling the band to be nominated for the Golden Melody Awards for the Best Hakka Album and the Best Hakka Singer in 2014 and 2016.

Hakka musician Chiu Lien-chin (邱廉欽) and non-Hakka music composer Dai Yang (戴陽) formed the band "iColor" at the end of 2013. Since then, they have released four Hakka albums. Despite his non-Hakka background, Dai made his efforts to get Hakka language certification, knowing that language is the best tool for communicating thoughts and feelings.  Through such efforts, he got a better understanding of Hakka culture that has helped him produce Hakka pop music.

Both Chiu and Dai look at iColor as a lively and joyful music group. Its style of songs is brisk and energetic. In 2015, the 10 songs the band released in its album called Beautiful (靚靚) broke the stereotype of Hakka songs. Besides lyrical songs and rock tunes, even A Cappella and electronic music were included in this album. The diverse style of the songs in the album was deeply loved by young people.

To promote Hakka music, iColor has launched a number of Hakka language activities, such as "Beautiful New Life Movement." It’s based on the song called “He O (That’s Right)” in its album “Beautiful” which is played during morning exercises. This activity was first held was Taipeis Rongxing Garden (榮星花園); it attracted a lot of people to take part in and to experience the fun of Hakka workout songs during exercise, successfully raising the profile of Hakka songs at that time.

In addition, the iColor band has participated in campus tours, working hard to help the next generation know more about Hakka music and make Hakka culture take root. It presents lively performances by employing pop music and dance and telling the stories of the Hakka youth. Through a pleasant and relaxing interactive atmosphere, it exposes young people to Hakka milieu, allowing them to find their enthusiasm and passion for Hakka culture and music. It is hoped that enjoying Hakka cuisine, speaking Hakka language, and listening to Hakka songs will become a new cultural vogue.

In September 2018, iColor released its 4th album "Return & Restore ()," which combines traditional and modern avant-garde elements. The clever mixture of the new and the old in this album redefines the essence of Hakka music, bringing amazement and stirring listeners’ heart.

The iColor band hopes that through music, more young people will be exposed to Taiwan's precious Hakka culture. It also hopes that their Hakka music will be brought to the young people’s attention in a way that is acceptable to them, and that it will bridge the gap between languages and music and let Hakka culture enter mainstream society, so as to create new opportunities for the flourishing of Hakka music industry.
