New Taipei City Hakka Museum

Located in Sanxia District, the New Taipei City Hakka Museum officially opened to the public on August 4, 2005. It is a testament to the efforts to preserve Hakka cultural heritage in New Taipei City.

The permanent exhibition rooms in the museum have exhibits with themes including: the migration history of Hakka groups; historical relics related to the Hakka ancestors in New Taipei City; the production of camphor and tea by Hakka people in the past; traditional Hakka clan sacrificial rituals; the era and background of the Hakka belief in “Yimin”—righteous people who fought to defend their community; and four types of music unique to Hakka culture: Hakka bayin music, Hakka folk songs, Hakka opera music, and Hakka sacrificial ceremony music. People visiting the New Taipei City Hakka Museum can explore the beautiful Hakka culture and rich Hakka history of the very city. It is a good way to gain a deep understanding of the Hakka culture of northern Taiwan.

Besides the exhibitions inside the museum, the architectural appearance of the New Taipei City Hakka Museum is also an important landscape not to be missed. It fully demonstrates the essence of Hakka culture. The building is designed to look like a “tu lou (土樓)”—Hakka round house—the most representative form of building in traditional Hakka architecture. The outer wall of the “tu lou” is equipped with holes for firing guns at intruders and tall windows that open vertically. The main function of these long windows in ancient times was to defend against foreign enemies. The museum presents the characteristics of Hakka architectural style everywhere. It is worth taking the time to stroll around the exterior of the museum to discover the beauty of the Hakka cultural landscape.

From time to time, the museum organizes special exhibitions of the works of Hakka artists to show the diverse artistic styles of the Hakka people.

There is also an authentic Hakka restaurant in the museum, which is a good place to taste Hakka cuisine. If you want to experience a baptism of Hakka culture in northern Taiwan, this is definitely a first choice tour destination.

The New Taipei City Hakka Museum integrates traditional culture and modern creative thinking through the collection, preservation and display of exquisite traditional Hakka cultural relics. That makes it a great place to sightsee, learn about and deeply feel the beauty of Hakka culture. As a result, the museum has achieved its aim of being a travel destination that promotes and spreads Hakka culture.
