To show off Hakka culture, industry and lifestyle, and enhance the inheritance and development of Hakka industries, the Council promotes the Hakka Crafts Transmission and Regional Revitalization Pilot Project to help elevate Hakka traditional crafts, transform environments and spaces, and open channels for commodities; and to provide field training grants as well as skills training subsidies for apprentice students, advice on converting front shop, back factory and tourist factory educational experience environments, and to encourage young people to invest in the traditional Hakka craft market, in order to inject new blood into traditional Hakka traditional industries and bring new value to traditional crafts.
Since Hakka areas already face a decline in traditional crafts and the willingness among young people to return to the countryside is low, in order to encourage Hakka youth to return to and remain in their hometowns to pass down traditional Hakka crafts to the future generations, this project does not exclude returning youths from the second generation taking part in learning and passing on skills. It is hoped the investment of our own youth may inject new vitality into Hakka communities and make the promotion and inheritance of traditional Hakka crafts more valuable.
Further, the introduction of the ideas of front shop, back factory and experience-style economy allows the public through hands-on and close-up observation of masters’ production process to increase interest in traditional skills and crafts, in order to attain communication and promotion goals.
Project Achievements
This round of supporting the crafts industry has included eight companies involved in the production of tea (Rixin Tea Plantation); camphor (Yu Li Hang Biochemical Skill Subject Industrial Co., Ltd.); ceramics (Spring Kiln Cultural Co., Ltd; Tongluo Kiln); oil-paper umbrellas (KCS Umbrella); gourds (Shanlin Gourd Art Workshop); brown sugar (Xing-Cheng Brown Sugar) and lemongrass (Chang Kun Enterprise Co.). In addition to helping to implement the transformation of environments and spaces, this project’s achievements have been shown through taking part in the 2020 Taipei International Travel Fair and 2020 National Hakka Stir-Fry Culinary Competition exhibitions, and organizing marketing promotions such as results presentations. At the same time we have helped advise operators on carrying out skills and product promotion in order to continue the promotion of traditional Hakka crafts and to train and develop talent.
