Deputy Minister Liao stated that in order to rescue the endangered Zhao’an Hakka language, HAC established the Zhao’an Hakka Teaching Resource Center at Dong Shing Elementary School in Lunbei Township, Yunlin County. By bridging five local schools—including those in Lunbei and Erlun—the center fosters Zhao’an Hakka education and provides teachers with instructional materials. HAC remains committed to revitalizing minority dialects, ensuring that the Zhao’an Hakka language takes root in both the classroom and daily life.
Deputy Minister Liao also mentioned that Xiluo, Lunbei, and Erlun represent the core townships of Yunlin’s Zhao’an Hakka culture. She hopes that local students can master the “three treasures of Yunlin” before finishing elementary school—Hakka martial arts, open-mouth lion dance, and Zhao'an Hakka puppetry—and become familiar with local Yunlin writers such as Sung Tse-lai and Lin Shui-fu.
Founded in the 33rd year of the Meiji era (1900 AD), Wenchang Elementary School stands as the earliest modern educational institution established in Xiluo, carrying a century-old legacy of local learning. An iconic historical site, the historic dormitory complex preserves the atmosphere of campus life from the Japanese colonial era to the early post-WWII period.
Registered as a historical building on March 30, 2015, the historic dormitory complex of Wenchang Elementary School consists of a north building and a south building. The project included paving improvement on the old dormitory’s outer walkway, brick wall restoration to enhance the site’s route and aesthetic, as well as drainage, pest control, and other works. Upon completion of restoration, the north building will be repurposed as an agri-food education and local language classroom, while the south building will serve as a time corridor and meeting space. Such diverse teaching environment will provide students with a learning space that integrates culture, environment, and daily life. The project is scheduled for completion in April 2027.
