By matching with BOCH’s by POINTS: Present Meets Future 3D scan digital imaging exhibition, the current Hsiao’s Historic House Virtual Museum represents an impressive achievement of THCDC’s Liugdui Major Hakka Architecture Cultural Asset 3D Preservation Program. The exhibition breaks through the static framework of traditional shows, leveraging point cloud to convert historic monuments into interactive digital spaces. People can operate the user interface like a game to freely switch perspectives: it only takes a second to, like an emperor, overlook the majestic layout of this Liugdui residential compound and its opulent arrangement of five adjacent yards, or step through the entryway and inner courtyard, all the way into the Buyue Pavilion, which bore witness to the Yiwei War in resistance of Japan’s invasion. No longer cold, hard data only, point clouds now serve as guides leading visitors to explore stories of yore.
THCDC has long been dedicated to promoting the cultural past of Hakka villages in Liugdui. On this occasion, it picked a central space for Hakka ancestor worship and familial duties: the fo fong, or traditional residential compound, to build a platform that showcases Hakka villages as living museums. The Liugdui area spans Kaohsiung and Pingtung. To allow more people to transcend geographical limitations and learn about its precious cultural assets, the iconic Hsiao’s Historic House was chosen to build a virtual museum. Not only does this meticulously document the architecture, but it serves as a key to open the gate of Hakka culture for people that have never had the chance to visit in person.
