Deputy Minister Fan emphasized that the purpose of establishing GHAS is to build connections between Taiwan and international universities across the world; and enhance the international visibility of Hakka academic journals through joint research and publication and holding of regular academic conferences on Hakka and ethnic studies. The achievements of Taiwan's Hakka research and experience in Hakka social movements can be shared for reference by other nations.
Hsin-Huang Michael Hsiao, Convener of the Hakka Academic Development Committee under HAC, said that GHAS has successfully carried out two international biennial academic conferences and three youth camps over the past five years, and will continue to fulfill the role of promoter and gatekeeper of positive alliances, as to foster Hakka academic development going into the coming five years.
The Consortium of Global Hakka Studies (GHAS) is a global academic exchange platform founded on December 10, 2019 by 10 universities of 7 countries: Taiwan, the United States, Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand, by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for global Hakka research and academic collaboration among member institutions. Each member institution can also choose to sign a bilateral academic exchange MOU with each other.
