Breathing New Life to Old Songs: Her Voice Choir Wins Gold in TICC’s Folklore Music Category


Hsinchu’s Her Voice Choir won gold in the Folklore Music Category at the 6th Tokyo International Choir Competition (TICC) for their performance of traditional Hakka tune Lok Sui Ten.The choir seeks to promote choral singing and bring the magic of Hakka culture and music to more people.

Hsinchu-based Her Voice Choir was founded two years ago and participated in the 6th TICC on July 28 under the leadership of conductor Sung Chih-ting. They were faced against 51 outstanding choirs from around the world and snatched the gold in the Folklore Music Category.

They performed a modern arrangement of classic Hakka song Lok Sui Ten, breathing new life into the old ballad recounting Hakka people’s determination to overcome life’s hardships. The jury was delighted by the enthralling harmony and memorable interpretation, deciding to confer the top prize in the category.

According to the database of the Hakka Affairs Council (HAC), Her Voice Choir is an arts and culture organization established in 2022. A gathering place for singing lovers of the larger Hsinchu region, its mission is to reach new heights in the art of choral singing and build a collaborative culture of mutual growth.

With a fascination for Hakka choral music, the ensemble won bronze in the Women’s Choir Category at the National Amateur Choir Competition held by the National Changhua Living Art Center in 2023.In 2024, they won HAC’s Hakka Choir Competition, receiving the Excellence Award in the Amateur Choir Category.
