Hakka opera ‘Bride for One Night: Once in a Lifetime’ to be performed in Pingtung, Taoyuan, Chiayi

Sponsored by the Hakka Affairs Council (HAC), Hakka opera Bride for One Night:   Once in a Lifetime (一夜新娘一世妻) is being performed across Taiwan. Its premiere took place at Taiwan Traditional Theatre Center (TTTC) in Taipei on June 28, which was the first cultural event at TTTC after the government announced an easing of COVID-19 restrictions.

The opera will be staged in Pingtung’s Liudui Hakka Cultural Park on Sept. 5.

Adapted from Professor Wang Chiung-ling (王瓊玲)s novel of the same name, the opera tells the story of Sakurako who lives her life under different political regimes in Taiwan, portraying the essence of humanity and fortitude of the people on the island during difficult times.

This stage show is performed by Rom Shing Hakka Opera Troupe (榮興客家採茶劇團), an iconic performing group that has won the Golden Melody Awards for Traditional Arts and Music for six consecutive years.

The troupe not only preserves exquisite features of the Hakka opera, including the beautiful music, singing, and acting, but also seeks breakthroughs in this unique performing art. The stage and costumes were aesthetically designed for the setting of the play. Incorporating concepts of films and musicals, the opera diversifies the cultural landscape of Hakka traditional theaters.

The opera tour is taking place in Taipei, Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Taichung City, Hualien County, Pingtung County, Taoyuan City, and Chiayi County from June 28 through Oct. 4.
