Hakka theatre about White Terror to be staged in Taipei, Tainan

The Hakka theatrical production “Those Days, Those Brotherhoods (范天寒和他的弟兄們),” which premiered in 2018, will be restaged in Taipei on Sept. 25 and 26 as well as in Tainan on Oct. 17 and 18 by Assignment Theatre (差事劇團).

To promote the show, Hakka Affairs Council (HAC) Minister Yiong Con-ziin attended a press conference with Chung Chiao (鍾喬), the leader of Assignment Theatre, and director Wang Wei-lien (王瑋廉) in Taipei on Aug. 27.

Based on a feature story of the iconic left-wing magazine Ren Jian (人間)” in 1988, the play portrays a tragedy of a Hakka family during the White Terror period in Taoyuan’s Longtan area and a strike launched by Hakka employees of a chemical fiber factory in Hsinchu’s Xinpu Township.

Yiong said that the play reflects that political oppression in Taiwan’s Hakka settlements during the martial law era was common, and the inhumanity of White Terror deeply traumatizes this ethnic group. Those who experienced the cruelties at that time usually have trouble recovering from the mental anguish, the minister said.

Yiong said that the White Terror profoundly affects Taiwanese Hakkas’ attitudes towards society, their views of politics and perspectives on self-identity, noting that, for the Hakka community, it is not only a transitional justice issue but also an ethnic trauma that should be properly healed.

“If we are willing to face the history and discuss it honestly, we can truly understand what our ancestors had suffered and figure out the meaning of our existence,” said Yiong.
