2020 Tour de Taiwan to kick off in March

Tour de Taiwan, one of the most iconic cycling events in Asia, will be taking place from March 1 through 5, 2020. It will be held in five stages, including Taipei City, Taoyuan City, Taiwan Romantic Route 3, Pingtung County, and Kaohsiung City.

Thanks to the efforts of King Liu (劉金標), founder of the famous Taiwanese bicycle manufacturing company Giant Bicycles, Tour de Taiwan was first held in Taipei in 1978. This cycling tour championship was recognized by International Cycling Union (UCI) in 2005.

To introduce Taiwan Romantic Route 3 to the world, the Hakka Affairs Council collaborated with the governments of Hsinchu County, Miaoli County, Taichung City, and the Chinese Taipei Cycling Association to organize Stage 3 of the 2020 Tour de Taiwan.

The route connecting two counties and one city is 158.5 kilometers in length, starting from HSR Hsinchu station (新竹高鐵站).  The cyclists will pass through 15 Hakka settlements and 31 scenic sites, including Sanwan Old Street (三灣老街), Lion's Head Mountain Scenic Area (獅頭山風景區), Tri-mountain National Scenic Area (參山國家風景區), Wenshui Old Street (汶水老街), Dongshi Bridge (東勢大橋), and Shihgang Visitor Information Center (石岡旅客服務中心). There will be two climbing challenges: Xianshan Stone Stele (仙山石碑) and Li Yu Tan Reservoir (鯉魚潭水庫) in Miaoli. The sprinting challenges are to be held at Shangguan Elementary School (上館國小) in Hsinchu and Nanzhuang Visitor Center (南庄遊客中心) in Miaoli.

Also known as Provincial Highway 3, Taiwan Romantic Route 3 is replete with the history, culture, and traditional industries of the Hakka people. The steep and bendy road also poses great challenges to excellent cyclists from around the world, who are expected to gain brand new experiences from this part of the race. The international cycling competition will not only publicize Hakka culture on a grand scale, but also boost the economic development and enhance the collective spirit of the Hakka villages located along the route.
